The Button Color Trap

The problem isn't the testing methodology. It's what they choose to test. A perfectly executed test on an irrelevant variable produces a perfectly irrelevant result.
The ICE Framework, Reimagined
Most CRO practitioners know the ICE scoring model — Impact, Confidence, Ease. But the standard approach is too subjective. Here's how we've modified it to be data-driven:
- Impact: We calculate this from actual traffic and conversion data. How many users touch this element? What's the potential revenue delta if we improve it by 10%?
- Confidence: We look at heatmaps, session recordings, and exit surveys. If three data sources agree on the problem, confidence is high.
- Ease: We estimate dev hours, not just "easy/medium/hard." A 2-hour change that moves revenue is infinitely better than a 40-hour rebuild.
Where the Real Wins Are
After running 1,400+ tests across our client portfolio, the highest-impact test categories are, in order:
- Form optimization — reducing fields, adding progress indicators, improving error states. Average lift: 22%.
- Social proof placement — not whether you have testimonials, but where and when they appear in the decision flow. Average lift: 18%.
- Page load performance — this isn't even an A/B test. It's a technical fix. But every 100ms matters. Average lift: 11%.
- Content hierarchy — reordering sections so the strongest value prop appears before the scroll fold. Average lift: 15%.
The best A/B test is one you didn't have to run because the data already told you the answer.
Stop Testing, Start Measuring
Before you run another test, make sure you can answer these three questions with data — not opinions:
- Where are users dropping off in your funnel?
- What's the last thing they interact with before leaving?
- Which traffic source has the highest conversion rate, and why?
